Phill & Jane

Sometimes we get stuck in the humdrum of life and before we know it another year has passed, we’re still single and feel like there’s no-one out there for us. 1. Choose a venue in a public place, in broad daylight and preferably one that you are familiar with. A lunch, coffee or weekend brunch is ideal for the first meeting.
2. Choose your outfit carefully. First impressions do count. Provocative clothing can often send the wrong message. Wear something conservative and tasteful that gives the impression of confidence.
3. If you are a car owner, drive yourself there, and park as close to the entrance as you can. For those without a car, book a taxi or ask a friend to drop you off and pick you up at pre arranged time.
4. Take your mobile phone with you. Tell a friend where you are going, and set up a coded message with them. Ask them to call you after an hour, and the code will let them know if the date is going ok, or whether you need rescuing. Always have a rescue plan.
5. Make sure you have enough money with you to cover any emergency. Pay for yourself. Going “Dutch” avoids any misunderstanding of future obligations.
6. Always be present when your drink arrives. If your date asks you what you would like as your leaving to use the toilet, tell them you will decide when you return. It’s a rare statistic, but women have fallen foul of drugs being added to their drink.
7. Stay sober even if your date doesn’t. Be in control of all your senses. Alcohol lowers your inhibitions and can often result in making mistakes that can’t be undone.
8. Try and arrange to meet a friend or family member post date. This will avoid any temptation to extend the date and it gives you a reason to leave on time if the date isn’t going that well.
